CONFERENCE
The UNISCA course aims towards the conference, which takes place from 7th till 14th January 2011. The conference offers an average of 110 students the opportunity to simulate the workings of the United Nations in its many facets. During the conference, theory will be put into practice by assuming the role of a diplomat representing a country. Students act as delegates from a specific country and take part in one of the committees. In their committee, the task of the students is threefold:
- bringing important information into discussion
- arguing to convince other delegates to agree with their point of view
- writing resolutions on the issues under consideration
This year’s conference edition will be held from the 7th till 14th of January 2011 in Amsterdam. The first part of the conference consists of the weekend starting on Friday 7th. These days give students the opportunity to prepare for the conference, by teaching students relevant skills and providing them with the knowledge needed for the simulation. The actual UN simulation will begin on Monday 10th with the Opening Ceremonies of the General Assembly, where all participants are present. The days after will be spent on discussing the topics in the specific committees. All students represent a country and take part in one of the five committees. The students from the Press Department are assigned to a committee and report on the conference in a daily newspaper. Each committee considers three unique issues from its agenda. On the final day, the various committees will unite again in the General Assembly and present their adopted resolutions to the General Assembly.
The conference is an intensive programme, similar to the actual conference. This means that there will not be any spare time, as sessions start early in the morning and end late. Therefore, students should remember not to make other appointments during this week. Though participation in the conference will not be graded, it is compulsory nonetheless.
