. When is the enrolment-deadline?
The enrolment deadline is October 1st, 2007. After this date individual positions will be assigned to enrolled participants.
. Will my university recognize study credits I receive for UNISCA?
Many universities recognize the academic value of UNISCA and allow students to implement it into their curriculum. Please contact UNISCA if you are not sure if you can use the UNISCA study credits for your course at secretary@unisca.org.
You can also participate in the course without receiving the 10 ECTS, UNISCA holds control over this regulation and can provide the student with this ‘free’ participation based on motivation, private situation and curriculum. At student’s request we can provide a certificate, acknowledged by the UvA, which states that the student in question has completed the academic course.
· When will the lectures take place?
There will be 3 prep days in order to prepare for the conference, data will be announced.
. What is UNISCA?
UNISCA is the United Nations International Student Conference of Amsterdam. It is a course offered by the Universiteit van Amsterdam in cooperation with the UNISCA foundation. The highlight of this course is the Winter Course: a realistic UN simulation, preceded by a week of preparation, in which participants can enhance their knowledge about the subject and train practical skills.
Is it possible for UNISCA to sponsor my participation and/or travel costs?
Unfortunately UNISCA does not have the funds to subsidise the costs that delegates make for participation in the UNISCA course and conference. There are, however, funds, which do sponsor travel and other expenses for, study purposes. Delegates can apply to certain organizations by themselves. (www.nuffic.nl, www.beursopener.nl)
· I live far away, where will I stay in Amsterdam?
We urge all participants to contact friends and acquaintances to to arrange housing. If this is not possible, UNISCA will try to help in finding you accommodation. One possibility is to be housed by a student in Amsterdam. The Secretariat tries to find students in the region to host you. The UNISCA Secretariat cannot in any way guarantee free housing arrangements. Another possibility is to stay in a hostel. On students request UNISCA can make reservations on your behalf at a hostel, but will not pay for the hostel!!
· I don't have enough money to pay for my travel expenses and accomodation. Does UNISCA have grants for foreign students?
Unfortunately, the UNISCA Foundation does not have any funds for grants to students. However, you may check out the website www.nuffic.nl or www.beursopener.nl to find out if there are any scholarships available for you. You may also want to check the website of the Dutch embassy in your country, or the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, because they usually have information for students travelling to the Netherlands.
· I attended UNISCA last year, but I have a few problems with my grade registration, what should I do?
Contact UNISCA about this at academic@unisca.org and we will see what we can do about it.
· How to get your UNISCA credits recognized?
Every participant of UNISCA who passes the course receives 10 ECTS in credits from the Universiteit van Amsterdam, Faculteit Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen (Faculty of Social and Behavioral Studies). This does not mean that you will get them recognized automatically at other faculties of the UvA or at other universities.
To get these credits recognized at another faculty of the Universiteit van Amsterdam, you will have to contact your examination commission in writing or by phone. In principle, all examination commissions know about UNISCA and should be able to say whether or not it is recognized immediately. If they need more information, you can contact us at academic@unisca.org and give us the contact person and address to which to send our academic prospectus. This is a document explaining the academic content of the course and the requirements and explains why it should be recognized as a 10 ECTS course.
· How much does participating in UNISCA cost?
The fee for participating in UNISCA will be Euro 98,-. This fee does not include food and accommodation or travel expenses. Unable to collect the reader? Students can receive their readers threw post. Shipping costs are app. E 7,5 for Dutch students and E 20,00 for foreign. These costs must be paid, are not refundable and must be paid in advance.
· How do I apply for a chair position?
Applying for a Chair or President position is done by filling out the section 'Conference Committee' on the Registration Form. In addition, you will have to write a formal letter of application addressed to the UNISCA Board of Directors, stating the reasons why you have for applying for a Chair or President position and relevant previous experiences you might have in the field of chairing. Obviously, having chaired before is a great asset, but not a requirement.
· Do I have to attend lectures?
There are 3 lectures in the first semester, but since UNISCA is a course meant for students from around the world we will provide lectures as well as study material in the Virtual Classroom for people who are unable to attend these lectures.
· Do I get study credits for UNISCA?
Yes, UNISCA is an inter-disciplinary university course. The Universiteit van Amsterdam offers 10 ECTS credits for it. But UNISCA can not guarantee that any other University of faculty will acknowledge the ECTS. At student’s request we can provide a certificate, acknowledged by the UvA which states that the student in question has completed the academic course.
· Can I represent my own country at UNISCA?
No, you may not represent the country you are a citizen of, as it is one of UNISCA’s objectives to increase your knowledge of other countries.
· Can I pay the tuition fee by credit card?
Unfortunately not, the tuition fee must be transfered to our bank account. Paying cash at our secretariat is possible, but only before the start of the course in November.
· Can I attend the conference without taking part in the course?
No, you can't.
· I'd like to help in the organization, what can I do?
UNISCA is always in need of assistance, especially during the conference. If you would like to volunteer or help out, please contact UNISCA at secretary@unisca.org or visit the vacancies section of the site. Conference assistants take care of facilitating communications and carry out various logistic tasks. No prep readings and studying, but enjoying the fun of the conference week. No academic value and no academic credits, but a unique opportunity to look behind the scenes
